‘Something every CFO should know’. SYDNEY, Australia (February 24, 2012)
The case for Cloud computing should start with you, the CFO
Having a combined experience of more than 100 years I.T consulting, management and technical capability amongst the Cloud Adapt team, we feel somewhat qualified to state the vast majority of complexity in IT today is not required.
Our biggest challenge is having an audience with a CFO or even a CEO to explain why. As this article explains, Cloud computing can offer savings in the region of 70-80% – Cut 70% against your IT spend.
The reason for this is that 95% of organisations run IT today in a way that compares to running your own generator to create your own electricity.
You have a room to house kit that needs the following;
- Air conditioning
- Backup
- Replication
- Operational management
- Upgrades every couple of years
- Power
- Software updates
- Licencing
- Lots of people.
Cloud computing on the other hand provides computation, software, data access, and storage resources without requiring cloud users to know the location and other details of the computing infrastructure.
End users access cloud based applications through a web browser or a light weight desktop or mobile app while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. Cloud application providers strive to give the same or better service and performance as if the software programs were installed locally on end-user computers.
Having sat with an 80-employee company’s CFO at a presentation this week, it was telling when he stated, “hold on, so I can redeploy my 2 IT people, take away my data centre, reduce my power costs and run all of these services out of the Internet?” The feedback from the room was a resounding yes.
This is not always the case, however as his business will revolve around a Cloud based ERP system and Cloud based email, file storage, office productivity solution and collaboration, this in his case is absolutely true.
There are many different forms of Cloud, Public, Private, Hybrid, SAAS, IAAS and PAAS. The challenge is discerning what this means from a business perspective and what the true costs are over an extended period.
Think of your Internet banking or Facebook; you access it from a browser, you don’t need to worry about anything other than having an ability to access the Internet and remembering your password. Moving your email and other in-house IT systems to the Cloud is comparable to running them in a ‘Facebook or Internet banking’ manner.
Having received very positive feedback around our consulting across the dozen or so engagements to date, we pride ourselves on our ability to take a collaborative approach to building the case for Cloud and are able to work with you from the business case through a pilot into change management and production, to assist you in realising the benefits.
“Cloud Adapt’s Cloud consulting is on a par, if not better than the quality of KPMG and Accenture engagements, at a fraction of the price”.
CFO – Australian organisation.
- in response to our consulting report which demonstrated $1.1M dollars cost savings over 3 years across their 300 employees spend on email and office productivity.
After all, we are so confident Cloud Computing will provide real business benefits, that all consulting engagements are backed by a 30% cost savings guarantee; if we cannot remove more than 30% cost against the otherwise spend in the areas we study, then there is no charge for our report.
